The What To Expect Project seeks a Policy and Communications Associate. The incumbent plays a key role in the execution of What To Expect Project’s comprehensive domestic and international strategy. The Policy and Communications Associate is expected to work well both independently and as part of a team, has excellent research, writing, and editing skills; experience managing social media; a keen eye for detail; an ability to multi-task effectively; a self-starting disposition; and can meet and work under tight deadlines. The start date is in August 2023.
RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
- Support the drafting and distribution of letters and related materials, congressional and federal agency alerts, daily updates from domestic and international sources, and other written materials relevant to WTEP’s priorities;
- Communicate, coordinate, and collaborate with various stakeholders;
- Build, manage and maintain a database of external stakeholders, including action items/issues discussed during congressional, federal/state/local agency and other meetings of priority;
- In coordination with the Director of Policy and Advocacy and the Executive Director, represent WTEP at policy and advocacy coalition meetings;
- Manage WTEP’s website and daily social media activities;
- Design policy and advocacy materials for advocacy;
- Research about key issues and latest information on priority issues to WTEP;
- Develop fact sheets for the website and to distribute during meetings with congressional offices, federal/state/local agency officials, and other relevant stakeholders, including prospective donors;
- In coordination with the Director of Policy and Advocacy and the Executive Director, conduct direct outreach to congressional offices, federal/state/local agency staff, and other external stakeholders regarding issues of priority to WTEP, including scheduling meetings, sharing news/articles, and other relevant information;
- Develop briefing memos for meetings with policymakers and other stakeholders;
- Track priority legislation, federal/state/local agency announcements, request for proposals, information from key multilateral institutions, and keep the team apprised about key developments in real time;
- Draft policy reports for monthly updates to external audiences, and weekly for internal staff;
- Assist in the coordination, preparation, and management of logistics around policy and organizational events, initiatives, special projects, and presentations at various platforms;
- Attend and track briefings, presentations, and events, as needed;
- Manage all logistics and programmatic activities for the Baby Basics program;
- Outreach, coordinate, and oversee relevant campaign events, and related activities;
- Manage WTEP’s internship program;
- Create working document brainstorming ideas to increase engagement, partnership efforts, campaign initiatives and more;
- Ensure that all activities are delivered on-time and within scope;
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree in public health, public policy, or related field preferred;
- Experience in maternal health work preferred;
- Ability to multi-task effectively;
- Excellent communication, writing, analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Experience working with WordPress;
- Ability to perform a variety of tasks on short notice within designated deadlines;
- Self-starting and solutions-oriented, a strong team player, with a detail-oriented approach;
- Manage resources in an effective and efficient manner;
- Ability to work independently and remotely with a high degree of productivity, and to see projects through to completion; and
- Proven ability to solve problems creatively.
